What is Advent Revolution [Conspiracy]?

Almost 18 years ago, a few pastors were honest with themselves.  Each Advent season, they came to Christmas tired and a little empty–feeling like they’d missed it.  They’d gotten caught up in the busyness and somehow lost sight of the awe and wonder of Jesus’ birth. 


They decided to try something new.  A handful of churches joined together to make the Advent story personal again.  That first Christmas, they got creative, changed their traditions, and raised enough money to build a water well in West Africa.


The idea caught on quickly.  A book was written, videos were made, and what started as a small experience grew into a movement called Advent Conspiracy.


Here at Thomasville First Methodist, we joined the movement back in 2007 (and gave ours a revised name).  We started asking ourselves some big questions:

  • How can we truly honor Jesus as we celebrate His birthday?  
  • What if we spent less, so we could give more?

Christmas is the story of how God left the comfort of heaven to enter our world out of love.  Advent Revolution gives us a way to follow that example–to step out in love and make a difference, both here at home and around the world.

Around the World

In 2007, we began a new ministry in Rwanda, and Advent Revolution became a way to fund that work together.  Instead of focusing on ourselves, we pooled what we had and saw God do amazing things.  Over the years in Rwanda, Advent Revolution helped us build homes, provide scholarships, build churches, dig deep water wells, build a library, equip a medical clinic, start a feeding program, and support missionaries in Southern Asia.


Over the last few years, our Advent Revolution funds have supported a small village in a very remote area of Guatemala.  Together, we have had a schoolroom built complete with bathrooms and a playground, had a clean water system installed in almost 200 homes, built a fully functioning kitchen for the school children, so they are provided consistent nutritional meals, and provided water filters to every home in the village so they have clean water to drink.  All of this started with the simple idea to spend less–give more.

For many years we at TFMC have been a part of a revolution dedicated to doing Christmas differently. We believe that Christmas was meant to change the world!  The basic tenets of Advent Revolution have been:  Spend less. Give more.  Worship fully.  Love all.
